848 - A collection of Southeast Asian vessels, 15th-19th century, comprising: a Vietnamese green-glazed lime pot, modelled in the shape of an areca fruit with a round aperture, with a dripping green glaze pooling down from the handle to the shoulders, and three jarlets, decorated with a moulded frog or incised fish (5.5 to 10cm high) (4) Provenance: The Private Collection of Michael George Kuczynski (1941-2025), Cambridgeshire. Footnote: The lime pot was previously used for betel chewing, a custom common in Vietnam, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. A pot, filled with powdered lime, was passed around to guests, who each inserted a moistened finger in the hole to extract the amount of lime required. This was then smeared on a betel leaf, together with slices of areca nut and often extra flavourings such as clove and cardamom, folded into a wad, and chewed. The pot is modelled in the shape of an areca nut, the seed of the areca palm tree that grows in most tropical countries. Condition Report: The lime pot with some damages to the handle and crazing present to glaze, base with chips to rim. Ribbed water pot - small chips to handles. 2 x others - no obvious condition issues.
