519 - A collection of Chinese export famille rose armorial porcelain, 18th century, comprising: a dish, painted with the coat of arms of Barons Berkeley of Stratton, from the Berkeley family, the vertically hatched shield painted with an ermine chevron between ten gilt crosses, under a gilt coronet, surmounted by a helm and a unicorn, supported by two bearded wild men, the motto reading ‘PAUCA SUSPEXI PAUCIORA DESPEXI’ (I have admired few things, I have despised fewer), a milk jug, painted with the coat of arms of the Bonar family, the white shield with a blue saltire beneath a blue chief bearing a hand emerging from a white sleeve and offering a shoulder of mutton to a gilt lion, surmounted by a helm and an upright sword, the motto reading ‘DENIQUE COELUM’ (Heaven at last), a bowl, painted with the coat of arms of the Ramsay family, the gilt shield bearing a black eagle, surmounted by a helm and a unicorn’s head, the motto reading ‘ORA ET LABORA’ (Pray and work), a lobed tea bowl, painted with the arms of Fector impaling Lane, the left half quartered in green and gilt, each green quarter bearing two white doves, the right half divided vertically in blue and iron-red with three white saltires, surmounted by a dove holding a leafy sprig in its beak, the motto reading ‘FIDE FELICES FACTI’ (Made fortunate by faith), a coffee cup, with a naval scene, a salt, with an Arabic inscription, dated 1191 AH (1777-1778 CE), and two further armorial coffee cups and a tea bowl (dish 15.5cm diameter) (9) Provenance: The Private Collection of Michael George Kuczynski (1941-2025), Cambridgeshire. Footnote: The lobed tea bowl was likely part of a larger armorial service, produced for James Peter Fector - the son of Peter Fector of Dover and his wife Mary Minet, who married in 1751. James Fector married Frances Lane in 1783, daughter of Thomas Bateman Lane, who had been Mayor of Dover in 1770 and was possibly descended from Sir Thomas Lane, Lord Mayor of London in 1695. On 6 June 1814, the Tsar of Russia stayed at the Fectors' house, having landed at Dover en route to London to attend a Peace Conference. This service was used at a banquet given that day in his honour. 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain Volume I', David S Howard, Faber & Faber, 31 May 1974, p. 663. Condition Report: Dish - star crack to base. Bowl - cracked to rim. Milk jug - cracked to rim, chipped to spout and handle. All with gilt and enamel losses.
