The Devil and the Monk In a hermitage, a devil stands beside a monk who is reading a book; the monk’s posture suggests he is resisting the devil or demon, the devil holding a small flame in his hand, which can be interpreted as a sign of false enlightenment; a typical depiction of temptation by evil, seeking to lead the good (i.e. the monk) through false enlightenment, to lead the good (i.e. the monk) astray from God’s true path; a moral reminder to the viewer not to fall for false enlightenment either, and to ward it off; a somewhat folk-style painting, oil on canvas, 17th/18th century, probably German, unsigned, canvas mounted on a backing board, in need of restoration, framed, inner dimensions 38.5 x 28 cm.
