Pietà Christ in the arms of his mother Mary; in a deeply emotional, intimate close-up, the viewer is made to feel the pain of the Virgin Mary. This motif is one of the most widely recognised in Christian iconography, there are several comparable works which are repeatedly attributed to the Flemish region, in some cases specifically to the school of Quinten Massijs; this too could be a Flemish or Italo-Flemish variant of the motif, oil on hardwood, probably 17th century, unsigned, signs of age, minimal restoration, black-lacquered frame with gold-decorated moulding, old label on the reverse reading ‘L’Arte Antica Livorno’, dated 1998, dimensions of the wooden panel 32.5 x 23.5 cm.
