Petrus Johann van Regemorter, Angler by a Stream bucolic scene; in the foreground, a man fishing in a stream, startled by a washerwoman with a child; on the left, three cows in a pasture; in the background, a mountain range with clouds gathering from the left; sunset scene, a work situated between the end of early modern genre painting and the emerging Romantic period, a finely executed masterpiece, oil on copper, signed ‘vRegemorter’ and dated 1779 in the lower right-hand corner, Copper plate covered on the reverse, signs of wear, gilded frame dented, inner dimensions approx. 23 x 30.5 cm. Artist information: Flemish-Belgian genre and landscape painter (1755 in Antwerp - 1830 there), a pupil at the Royal Academy in Antwerp, where he also worked as a restorer; from 1773 a member of the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp; from 1785 Dean and from 1796 Professor at the Academy in Antwerp; among others, teacher to Jan van Bellingen and Peter Paul Joseph Noel; in his genre works still strongly influenced by the Flemish painting of Teniers, and in his landscapes by Dutch traditions such as those of Jan van Goyen; his work also reveals early Romantic influences; in addition to his work as a painter, he was also successful as a restorer, art dealer and auctioneer.
