Pieter Jacob Horemans, Baroque still life with a dog, Horremann, 1773 A slightly atypical still life, featuring a hodgepodge of still-life elements on a pedestal, such as pears, grapes, a dead chicken and various flowers; at the foot of the architectural structure, on stone steps, further fruit lies scattered about, including two chickens and a dog relieving itself; to the left, above the arranged elements, a sculpture of a dog with a child; in the background to the right, a view of a landscape, with garden architecture in the foreground; here, the artist draws on the pictorial traditions of the French artist Alexandre-François Desportes (1661-1743), a highly remarkable work by this Rococo painter active in Bavaria, to be understood with a touch of humour; oil on canvas, signed ‘Petrus Horemans’ in the lower right-hand corner and dated 1771, Canvas lined, historically restored, old retouching visible, signs of age, in a period frame, inner dimensions 49 x 39 cm . Artist information: Flemish-German painter (1700 in Antwerp - 1776 in Munich), brother of Jan Josef Horemans, arrived in Munich in 1724 whilst en route to Rome, where he received commissions for the Dukes’ Kunstkammer; married in Munich in 173; from 1747 onwards, primarily received commissions from the Bavarian bourgeoisie; appointed court painter in 1769, yet died in poverty in 1776; in addition to his commissions for the electoral court, he mainly produced kitchen still lifes and genre scenes in the tradition of Flemish painting.
