Martinius de la Court, Pastoral Evening Landscape in the foreground, a young woman in a red skirt is seated; behind her, a woman is milking a cow, sheep and a ram, at a watering hole; in the background, a view out across a vast landscape with a riverbed and mountains at sunset; a typical and beautiful example of a 17th/18th-century Baroque landscape, here showing a clearly recognisable influence of Italian landscape painting, which the artist became acquainted with through the painter Cornelis van Poelenburch; oil on canvas, signed in red in the lower right-hand corner, lined, restored, minor signs of age, in a gold frame, Inner dimensions: 61.5 x 81.5 cm. Artist information: Dutch-Belgian painter (born in Brussels in 1640; died, presumably, in Leiden in 1710), married Anna van Oppy in Brussels in 1664, his son Johannes Franciscus de la Court was born in 1684; documented as a member of the Guild of St Luke in Delft from 1693; moved to Leiden between 1696 and 1701; was strongly influenced by the works of Nicolaes Berchem, Cornelis van Poelenburch and Jan Verkolje.
