Artist information: German painter and graphic artist (1899, Berlin - 1990, Neuenhagen near Berlin); military service 1918-19; from 1922, took art lessons at primary school under Hans Baluschek; 1925-28: attended the Berlin School of Applied Arts and Commerce; was active in numerous communist organisations and worked for various newspapers; taught linocut at the Marxist Workers’ School, Arrested twice by the Gestapo in 1933 and fled to Prague; fled to England via Poland in 1939; interned on the Isle of Man in 1940; returned to Germany in 1948 and settled in Neuenhagen; 1955-60: worked for the League of Friendship between Peoples; from 1983: member of the VBK (Association of Visual Artists) of the GDR; Source: Eisold, *Artists in the GDR*, and Wikipedia.
