David Bates, "On Pencraig Moor, Bettws-y-Coed" A woman gathering brushwood in a vast, barren landscape, crossing a bridge over a fast-flowing stream; other workers on the moor; watercolour in muted colours on paper, 1914, signed and dated ‘David Bates 1914’ in the lower left-hand corner, additionally signed, titled and dated on the reverse on an attached piece of cardboard, minimal signs of ageing, framed under glass with a passe-partout, passe-partout dimensions approx. 36 x 52.5 cm. Artist information: English painter, porcelain painter and woodcut artist; worked at the Worcester Porcelain Manufactory from 1855 to 1880, producing exquisite works (mostly floral paintings) for the court of King Charles; after leaving the manufactory, he worked primarily as a landscape painter; resided in Birmingham and Malvern from 1884 to 1899; undertook study trips to Egypt and Switzerland; submitted works to numerous exhibitions, including 1868-93 the Royal Academy, the Grafton Gallery and the exhibitions of the New London Watercolourists’ Society; source: AKL and Benezit.
