Julius Wentscher, Emperor Frederick III on the Ice Frederick III, the penultimate German Emperor, with his wife Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland, skating together on a frozen lake, surrounded by members of the court and servants; a finely nuanced ink drawing with minimal highlights on light card, c. 1885, signed ‘J. Wentscher”, folded, minor imperfections, sheet dimensions approx. 27 x 39 cm. Artist’s details: properly Julius Theophil Wentscher, also known as Julius Wentscher the Elder, German landscape and marine painter (1842, Graudenz, Province of Prussia - 1918, Berlin-Wilmersdorf), studied at the Art Academy in Königsberg, subsequently studied at the Berlin Academy under Hans Frederik Gude, first presented his works at the Berlin Academy exhibition in 1881, in 1899, he was awarded the Small Gold Medal for Art; he was a member of the General German Art Cooperative and the Association of Berlin Artists; father of Julius Wentscher the Younger; source: Thieme-Becker, Saur ‘Bio-Bibliographical Artists’ Encyclopaedia’ and Wikipedia.
