Johann Baptist Homann, Map of the Franconian District in the lower left-hand corner, a magnificent figurative cartouche inscribed with ‘Electoratus Moguntinus... Joh. Bapt. Homanno...’, depicting the area between Marburg in the north, Wertheim in the east, Stuttgart in the south and Simmern in the west; partially coloured copperplate engraving, c. 1700; standard crease in the centre, slight signs of age; image dimensions approx. 56 x 47.5 cm, sheet dimensions approx. 63 x 53 cm. Artist’s details: German copperplate engraver, publisher and Jesuit (1664, Kambach - 1724, Nuremberg), presumably a pupil of David Funck; founded his own publishing house, the ‘Homännisches Landkarten-Offizin’, around 1702, in 1715 he became a member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences; Emperor Charles VI conferred upon him the title of ‘Imperial Geographer’ and the Russian Tsar Peter the Great appointed Homann as ‘Imperial Russian Agent’, working in Vienna, Leipzig and Nuremberg; source: Thieme-Becker and the internet.
