Wenzel Hollar, Roman Soldiers Depiction of armed soldiers wearing helmets and armour; copperplate engraving, inscribed ‘F. Chorn”, “W. Hollar fec. 1654”, doubled, with some damage, framed under a passe-partout and behind glass, passe-partout cut-out approx. 21 x 15 cm. Artist information: also known as Wenceslaus or Václav Hollar, Bohemian draughtsman and copperplate engraver (1607 Prague - 1677 London), son of a wealthy family of civil servants; from 1927 in Frankfurt am Main, where he apprenticed under Matthäus Merian and collaborated on Merian’s topographical works; resided in Koblenz, Mainz and Strasbourg; in 1633, Lord Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, took notice of him in Cologne; accompanied Lord Thomas Howard to the imperial court in Prague and subsequently to Vienna; in 1635, published his first book of engravings; followed his patron Thomas Howard to England in 1637; in 1645, during the siege of Basing House, he was taken prisoner and fled to Antwerp, where he was reunited with Lord Thomas Howard; in 1668, he undertook an expedition to Tangier.
