3554 - Fine measuring chalice with silver inlay

Fine measuring chalice with silver inlay c. 1652, silver hallmarked and metal gilded, handwritten collection number 82-1464 on the base, engraved and embossed combined coats of arms of the families of the Lords of Wachenheim and the Vögts of Hunolstein with the initials AG VW and E VK, engraved dedication: “H. Johan Andrae - Pastor at Schilderdorf P (Pfrimm?) - Anno 1652”, presumably presented to the church or the pastor on the occasion of the marriage of Otto Ludwig von Wachenheim and Anna Margareta von Hunolstein (it is possible that this refers to Johann Andreas Goßmann (parish priest in Monsheim until 1651) is meant here); the flower-shaped, curving base of the chalice features mythological and secular reliefs of the gods Poseidon, Juno, Apollo and Hercules on the Nemean lion; above this is a Gothic-style disc-shaped nodus with cartouches; the cup features embossed and engraved depictions of ecclesiastical motifs such as the Adoration of Mary, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple or John the Baptist baptising Jesus, all within cartouches bordered by rocaille motifs. Signs of age and wear; slightly oxidised; one node is dented; the foot has tiny cracks; height 21.5 cm. Provenance: Otto Blokesch Collection, Bamberg.
