183 - A collection of Chinese export famille rose armorial plates, 18th century, comprising: a pair of soup plates, centred with lychee enclosed by a gilt scrolling floral border, below the coat of arms of Rattray, a shield with a central white stripe between two blue stripes, each having three gilt crosses, surmounted with a helmet below a fist holding a gilt cross, motto above 'Ex hoc victoria signo' (Victory by this sign), a soup plate, with the coat of arms of the Ross family of Balnagowan Castle, with three lions on a red ground surmounted by a hand holding a wreath, and the motto 'Nobilis est ira leonis' (Noble is the wrath of the lion), another lobed soup plate, enamelled with an oval blue-ground shield attributed to the Solier family, probably from a dinner service made for Jean Solier of the Vaud region of Switzerland, bearing a white tower beneath a radiant sun, with a lion rampant and a wheatsheaf below, enclosed by a gilt cartouche and surmounted by a coronet with pearls, within a border of fruiting and flowering stems in grisaille and gilt, a dish, with the arms of Lutwyche with Bagnall in pretence within an underglaze-blue dragon and phoenix border, and another dish, with the arms of Rait or Rhet of Hallgreen and Drumnagair, the motto reading 'Esto perpetua' (May it endure forever) (23cm diameter) (6) Provenance: The Private Collection of Michael George Kuczynski (1941-2025), Cambridgeshire. Footnote: Rattray: The senior branch of the family had been established at Craighall since roughly 1554, and among the prominent figures for whom this service may have been commissioned was Dr Thomas Rattray of Craighall (1684-1743). Dr Rattray left two sons: James of Craighall, who succeeded him to the estate, and John, an eminent Edinburgh surgeon who was Bonnie Prince Charlie's personal doctor during the Jacobite uprising. A distant relative was James Rattray (circa 1705-1774), son of Sir Rullion Rattray of Runnygullion, and also a staunch Jacobite supporter. Notably recorded as one of the last men to flee the battlefield at Culloden, James was subsequently captured and sent to London to stand trial for high treason. He escaped execution only by claiming that he had been forced against his will to join the Jacobite army. See David S Howard, 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain – Volume 1', Faber & Faber, 31 May 1974, p. 365. Ross: See a similar example pictured in David S Howard, 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain – Volume 1', p. 243. 清十八世纪 外销粉彩徽章纹盘 一组六件 Condition Report: Pair - one cracked. Ross - chipped to foot rim, rim restored with signs of rivets. Solier - A large crack to body with signs of repair. Lutwyche with Bagnall dish - chipped to rim, restored with rivets. All with gilt and enamel losses.
