A pair of Chinese blue and white dishes, Kangxi (1662-1722), each of circular form, the centre painted with eight horses grazing below swallows in flight, enclosed by a border with a landscape (21cm diameter) (2) Provenance: The Private Collection of Michael George Kuczynski (1941-2025), Cambridgeshire. Footnote: The decoration of this dish depicts the popular motif of the Eight Horses (Ba Jun), inspired by the legendary steeds of King Mu of the Zhou dynasty. According to tradition, the king travelled vast distances in a chariot drawn by eight extraordinary horses, a story that became deeply embedded in Chinese artistic and literary culture. During the Kangxi period, the subject had acquired auspicious associations, symbolising both the pursuit of success and the Confucian ideal of enlightened leadership, in which a wise ruler gathers capable and virtuous individuals to serve the state. 清康熙 青花八骏图盘 一对 Condition Report: Both with small chips to rim and foot rim.
