A Chinese Kraak blue and white bowl, Wanli (1573-1620), the lobed body rising from a circular foot, painted to the exterior with floral sprays with birds, beneath a band of galloping horses above spuming waves, the interior with a lakeside landscape to the centre, encircled by ten Buddhist wheels and a band of continuous landscape, with a four-character Fugui Jiaqi (Fine vessel for the rich and honourable) mark to base (21cm diameter) Provenance: The Private Collection of Michael George Kuczynski (1941-2025), Cambridgeshire. Footnote: A very similar silver-gilt-mounted example, traditionally known as the 'Walsingham Bowl', remains in the collection of Burghley House (Reference No. CER07500). According to a family inscription preserved with the bowl, it was presented by Queen Elizabeth I to her godson Sir Thomas Walsingham (1561-1630), and subsequently remained in the Walsingham family as a christening bowl for successive generations, see J Carswell, 'Blue and White: Chinese Porcelain Around the World', London, 2000, no.165. Other closely related examples are preserved in the collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum (Accession no. C.38-1928); and for another, see M Rinaldi, 'Kraak Porcelain: A Moment in the History of Trade', London, 1989, pl.168. 明万历 青花克拉克式飞马纹碗 《富貴佳器》青花款 Condition Report: Small chips and frits to rim.
