Albert Gustav Bunge, figurative candlestick ‘Kneeling Monk’, designed in the 1920s, unmarked, brass, partially patinated, slightly stylised depiction in the Art Deco style, a kneeling monk holding a candle holder in front of him, on a domed plinth, partially worn, minor signs of wear, H 11.5 cm. Artist information: German metal artist (1893, Rathenow - 1967, Salzburg); wounded in the hand during the First World War in 1914 and subsequently learnt to carry out all his work with his left hand; from 1918 a student at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in Angelo Jank’s drawing class; in 1922, he founded the Society for Applied Art (GFG) with Willy Wenz, and they exhibited together at the German Trade Exhibition in Munich; In 1924, the GFG merged with Alois Wörle’s ‘Society for New Munich Arts and Crafts’ (Gesellschaft Neues Münchner Kunstgewerbe GmbH) to form the ‘New Munich Art Workshops’ (Neue Münchner Kunstwerkstätten AG); from 1927, he ran a metal art workshop in Emmering, In 1931, he exhibited enamel works at the Munich Art Exhibition, which he had presumably designed with the painter and arts and crafts artist Lily Koebner-Linke; throughout his life, he worked in various cities, frequently collaborating with Koebner-Linke, In 1932, he stayed in Paris and collaborated with Jean Perzel; whilst the metal workshop in Emmering continued to operate, Bunge established a company in other locations, such as Reit im Winkl, which finished the blanks from Emmering with enamel work, From 1942, Bunge lived in Colmar in Alsace, but returned to Reit im Winkl in 1944 after his business partner, Lily Koebner-Linke, was interned in a prison camp and eventually deported.
