Hotel Elephant key ring 20th century, unsigned, with the inscription ‘Hotel Elephant Weimar’ on the reverse, bronze, elephant’s head in relief on the front, hanging loop, signs of age and wear, partially verdigrised, diameter 6 cm, length 8 cm. Info: the Hotel Elephant is a luxury hotel in Weimar and part of The Luxury Collection brand of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide; it was founded in 1696 by the princely cupbearer Christian Andreas Barritig as an inn on the market square, shortly afterwards, the inn was converted into a coaching inn and expanded to provide accommodation for merchants and travellers; artists of all kinds were guests there, the great classical masters dined here, Schiller held conversations here, and later Liszt and Wagner too; from 1921 to 1924, Bauhaus artists came and went, and the architect Hermann Giesler rebuilt it in 1938.
