AUBUSSON Beige field-patterned rug with a structured design featuring large arabesques and frames with gilded foliage motifs imitating carved woodwork, gilded Rocaille-style stucco forming four spandrels framing a large central medallion in the shape of a radiant royal blue rosette, inlaid with a beveled medallion featuring gold-yellow compartments and stylized diamond-shaped reserves. Beautiful border featuring four royal blue cartouches depicting gilded fleurs-de-lis. Rich botanical iconography featuring garlands and bouquets of lifelike flowers (roses, peonies, flower buds in pastel shades of pink, white, and red) winding around cornucopias and acanthus scrolls Late 19th – early 20th century 380 x 285 cm B.E Inspired by the compositions of Pierre-Josse Perrot, a painter at the Savonnerie under Louis XV, and by the decorative legacy of Charles Le Brun, this carpet is distinguished by its remarkable border of four royal blue cartouches adorned with golden fleurs-de-lis. As emblems of the French monarchy, these motifs evoke the refinement of 18th-century royal carpets, particularly those created for Louis XV at the Chaillot Manufactory, in the tradition of the grand Savonnerie designs. This type of piece is produced by the Braquenié workshops in Aubusson. Bibliography -The Savonnerie (The James A. De Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor by Pierre Verlet) -Great Carpets of the World (J. Paul Mikaeloff, Jacqueline Boccara) -The Registers of the Crown’s Furniture Storehouse Journal
