RARE 1728/33-TYPE FLINTLOCK MURDER RIFLE CONVERTED INTO A CANARDIER RIFLE. Long, round barrel with fluted muzzle, stamped with three hallmarks, engraved and marked “1626” on the upper flange. Flat-bodied Saint-Etienne lock, stamped “S.E.” beneath a crown, with a round-bodied hammer (civilian). Iron-sided lock case. Iron lock plate, trigger guard, butt plate, and ramrod guide. Heavy “cow’s foot” stock made of walnut (worm-eaten and damaged at the neck). The lock is signed on the inside and retains all its original mechanical parts. This regulation rampart musket was modified in the late 18th century for hunting by shortening the stock and altering the hammer, while retaining the original barrel, lock, fittings, and wood. Length: 2.485 m. Barrel length: 2.09 m. Trigger guard length: 175 mm. B.E. Showing signs of use. Circa 1730/1750. History: This rifle was found in a marsh, positioned near a gabion; many of these rampart muskets ended their service as “duck guns,” which explains, in particular, the condition of their wood; the weapon was not portable, as it remained in place in damp conditions, resting directly on the ground.
