Pierre GOBERT (1662–1744), attributed to Presumed Portrait of Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy, Duchess of Burgundy Oil on oval canvas H_80 x W_64 cm Re-stretched Related work: Pierre GOBERT, Presumed Portrait of Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy, Duchess of Burgundy, oil on oval canvas, Artcurial auction of September 24, 2019, lot 301. Pierre Gobert (1662–1744) was one of the most prolific portraitists of his time. Born into a family of artists, his father was a sculptor to the king, his brother a painter to the king, and his son became a miniaturist. Admitted to the Academy in 1701 with a “portrait of Monsieur Van Clève” and a “portrait of Monsieur Boullogne the Younger” [Louis de Boullogne], he enjoyed a strong reputation among the French aristocracy under Louis XIV and later under Louis XV. His clients included the princes and princesses of Lorraine, Condé, and Conti, as well as the Dukes of Orléans. The royal family also commissioned him: he painted portraits of Louis XV, Queen Marie Leczinska, and their children. He was regularly commissioned to produce multiple portraits of the same person, intended to adorn different residences. This is why another version of our painting exists, which was sold at Artcurial on September 24, 2019 (lot 301). An active figure in Parisian artistic life, he exhibited numerous paintings at the Salon and even rose to the rank of counselor to the Royal Academy. Having been partially forgotten during the 19th and 20th centuries, Pierre Gobert is now undergoing a rediscovery. Several works, erroneously attributed to Pierre Mignard and Jean-Baptiste Van Loo, must now be restored to him. Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy (1685–1712), daughter of Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, married Louis of France, Duke of Burgundy—grandson of Louis XIV—in 1697. Settling at the court of Versailles, she held a prominent position there and enjoyed the favor of the king and Madame de Maintenon. She gave birth to three sons, including the future Louis XV, before dying of measles at the age of only 26.
