Pierre MIGNARD (1612–1695), Attributed to Presumed Portrait of Madame de Nantes Oil on oval canvas H_55 × W_45 cm Relining and restoration Born in Troyes in 1612, Pierre Mignard trained under Jean Boucher, François Gentil, and Simon Vouet before leaving for Italy in 1635. During his stay in Rome, he studied the works of Raphael, the Carracci, and Domeniquin, whose influence helped shape his style. Upon his return to France in 1657, he became one of the most sought-after painters of his time, despite his rivalry with Charles Le Brun. He produced numerous religious and decorative paintings, notably the dome of the Val-de-Grâce Church in Paris. Particularly renowned for his portraits, he painted members of the royal family and prominent figures at court. His paintings are characterized by balanced compositions, luminous skin tones, delicate modeling, and an elegant idealization of faces. In 1690, upon the death of Charles Le Brun, he was appointed First Painter to the King and became director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Until his death in 1695, he remained one of the leading figures in French painting under Louis XIV.
