Pierre MIGNARD (1612–1695), follower of Presumed Portrait of Olympe Mancini Oil on canvas, oval format H_66 x W_54.5 cm Re-stretched Olympe Mancini (1638–1708), Countess of Soissons and Dreux, was an aristocrat of Italian descent. Having arrived at the French court at a very young age, she was the niece of Cardinal Mazarin and the older sister of Marie Mancini, the Sun King’s first love. In 1657, she married Eugène-Maurice of Savoy-Carignan, Count of Soissons, with whom she had eight children, including the famous Prince Eugene of Savoy. Close to the royal family, she became Superintendent of the Queen’s Household in 1661 and played an important role in court life. However, her rise was jeopardized by her alleged involvement in the Affair of the Poisons, which rocked the court of Louis XIV. In 1680, suspected of having participated in a plot against the king, she left France and found refuge in the Spanish Netherlands. She died in Brussels in 1708.
