17th-century French School, circle of Daniel Dumonstier (1574–1646) Portrait of King Louis XIII wearing the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Holy Spirit Oil on canvas mounted on panel H_69.5 cm W_56 cm Re-stretched, restored, varnish soiled and oxidized This painting bears a resemblance to another portrait of Louis XIII that recently appeared on the art market and is attributed to Daniel Dumonstier. The king is depicted wearing the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Holy Spirit over a light-colored, flowered outfit, which contrasts with the mourning attire worn in depictions of the monarch during his youth. We can also compare our painting to the portrait of Charles de Gonzague, Duke of Mantua, housed at the Musée de l’Ardenne and attributed to Daniel Dumonstier’s circle.
