BEAULIEU, Sébastien de Pontault de (1612–1674), after Nicolas COCHIN (1610–1686), engraver Map of the Île des Faisans Antique engraving framed under glass 46 x 55 cm (engraving) 49 x 58 cm (with frame) B.E Located on the Bidasoa River, on the border between France and Spain, Île des Faisans—also known as Île de la Conférence—was the scene of a major event in European history in 1659. It was on this small island that the agreements ending the Franco-Spanish War were negotiated and then solemnly concluded. The Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed by Mazarin and Luis de Haro, before being sealed by the marriage of Louis XIV and the Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria. It thus serves as both a historical testament and a spectacular reenactment of one of the great diplomatic moments of Louis XIV’s reign.
