Lucien LAPEYRE (1882–1967) “Flags of the National Guard in the 60 Districts of Paris” Large folio comprising 60 plates plus a title page, a frontispiece, and an end page—for a total of 63 pages of original gouaches. Ex-libris from the Anne S.K. Brown Collection B.E. History: A work depicting the flags of the National Guard from the 60 districts of the city of Paris. Each page shows a National Guard flag bearer holding a flag, which is mounted on a tab at the pole, allowing it to be turned over to view the reverse side. The frontispiece depicts La Fayette on horseback reviewing the flags of the Paris National Guard The plates were most likely based on the “Collection of Flags Made in the Sixty Districts of Paris in July 1789,” published by Vieilh de Varenne and illustrated by Moreau the Younger, and the “Curious and Interesting Description of the Sixty Flags… ” published by Sorin, bookseller, and Vieilh de Varenne in 1790. The latter work describes both the front and back of the sixty flags. This is an original work executed in gouache, enhanced with gold where necessary, and is even more comprehensive than the 1789 edition or that of Blanckaert and Lachouque from 1947.
