EON, Chevalier d’—LA FORTELLE. The Military, Political, and Private Life of Mademoiselle Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste (…) d’Eon de Beaumont, Squire, Knight of the Order (…) of Saint Louis…. Paris, Lambert, Onfroi, Valade, Esprit, 1779; 8vo, 176 pp. Contemporary binding in light-colored half-basane, smooth spine decorated with faux raised bands and gilt fleurons, coral clasp. Genealogy, testimonies, and letters shedding light on the life of the most famous transvestite in French history. Beautiful allegorical portrait depicting the Chevalier d’Eon (wearing the d’Eon signet ring) surrounded by symbols, with a well-proportioned bust. It is known that in 1774, he was compelled by the King to definitively reveal his gender and declared himself a woman. From that point on, it was impossible to depict him as a man.—A very fine copy.
