169 - "Roger CHAPELAIN-MIDY (1904–1992) – Étretat, 1989. Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Framed. 61 x 81 cm. As a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Roger Chapelain-Midy (1904–1992) began exhibiting in 1927 at the Salon d’Automne, then at the Salon des Indépendants starting in 1929, and at Drouant in 1930. This large-format oil on canvas is characteristic of his landscapes. The beach at low tide and the sharply defined cliffs are bathed in a beautiful light, which a couple is enjoying. In the distance, a ship emits steam, heralding the clearing skies and echoing the right side of the sky, which is overcast but being swept away by the tide. Although untitled, it is very likely that this landscape was painted in Étretat. Indeed, a canvas depicting a similar scene, of the same dimensions, and painted in the same year is housed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille and is identified as being from that location."
