1445 - General Vanuxem’s uniform. Includes his major general’s kepi made of khaki canvas, three metal stars originally attached, a false chin strap specific to generals fastened by two buttons bearing the generals’ coat of arms, a leather visor with a plastic band, a black satin lining, a leather headband bearing the mark of the hatmaker P. Vauclair, 28 rue Royale in Paris. His 1946-model jacket, size 48, made of khaki cloth; the size label bears his initials. The jacket fastens with four buttons bearing the generals’ coat of arms, as do the chest pockets; it features major general shoulder straps. Having served in the Muong battalions during his three tours of duty in Indochina, he wears the unit’s arm patch as an honorary distinction. Attached to the jacket are his Algerian Public Order Medal, his Drago Olivier Metra-manufactured parachutist certificate bearing the number 75821, his silver Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor plaque, and his six-line list of decorations. His trousers are made of heavy khaki wool, with three wide belt loops; the General’s initials are embroidered on one of the ecru cotton pocket linings. The trousers are in very good condition despite two small cuts. His officer-style shirt is made of beige cotton canvas and bears the Gordon label as well as his initials, PV. During the Indochina War, he commanded the marching battalion of the 6th RTM, then became commander of the Sontay sector in 1947, a position he held until 1948. His marching battalion was mentioned in the Army Order in June 1948. In 1950, he returned to Indochina to assume command of the Bien Hòa sector, a position he held until 1951. Noted and held in high regard by General de Lattre de Tassigny, the latter entrusted him with responsibility for the Tonkin Mobile Group. He returned to Indochina a third time as deputy commander of the 1st Tonkin Marching Division, then as commander of the Hasong sector, and finally as commander of the southern Tonkin zone. In this capacity, he was in charge of the evacuation of Hanoi following the Geneva Accords in 1954. Uniform of General Vanuxem. Includes his division general’s kepi in khaki cloth with three original mounted metal stars; a distinctive general’s chinstrap fastened by two buttons bearing the general’s coat of arms; a leather visor with a plastic rim; black satin lining; and a leather band marked “P. Vauclair, 28 rue Royale, Paris.” His 1946 khaki wool jacket, size 48, labeled with his initials, fastens with four general’s buttons—the same on the chest pockets—and features division general shoulder straps. Having served with the Muong battalions during three tours of duty in Indochina, it bears the unit’s honorary arm diamond. Attached to the jacket are his Algerian Order badge, the Drago Olivier Metra paratrooper badge (No. 75821), his silver Grand Cross plaque of the Legion of Honor, and six rows of ribbon bars. His heavy khaki wool trousers, featuring wide belt loops and his initials on the cotton pocket lining, are in very good condition, with two small cuts. His beige cotton officer’s shirt is labeled “Gordon” and bears the initials “PV.” During the Indochina War, he commanded the 6th RTM Marching Battalion; then, in 1947, he took command of the Sontay sector until 1948. His battalion was commended in army orders in June 1948. In 1950, he returned to Indochina to command the Bien Hoa sector until 1951. Highly regarded by General de Lattre de Tassigny, he was entrusted with command of the Tonkin Mobile Group. He returned a third time as deputy commander of the 1st Tonkin March Division, then as commander of the Hasong sector, and later of the southern Tonkin zone, where he oversaw the evacuation of Hanoi following the 1954 Geneva Accords.
