750 - English “Tantalum” liquor set, ca. 1900, with three faceted glass bottles featuring a geometric design. Made of oak with brass hardware, corner pieces, and handles. Features a label from Broqua & Scholberg, Montevideo. 37 x 29 x 14 cm. Missing its original key. One of the large bottles has a hole in its base. Patented in 1879 by cabinetmaker John Betjemann and popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the purpose of the “Tantalus” liquor cabinet was to protect expensive liquors from the temptation of servants, guests, or the household’s minor children. The name “Tantalus” for this type of furniture—in which the bottles are on display but accessible only through a safety lock— is a reference to the character of the same name from Greek mythology who, having angered the gods, was condemned to remain submerged up to his neck in a river of the underworld, above which hung fruits that remained forever out of his reach.
