Austrian table clock, ca. 1880, in silver, gilded bronze, and hand-painted polychrome enamel. A fine example of Viennese silversmithing in an eclectic and historicist style. The central medallion, whose reverse and interior are illustrated with hand-painted oval scenes featuring allegorical and landscape motifs, is protected by a hinged cover with a bombé glass pane set in a chiseled frame, featuring a dial enameled in the champlevé technique, decorated with volutes and polychrome floral motifs, while the hours are indicated by black Roman numerals set within small gilded medallions. This main body is supported by the sculpted figure of an elephant, which carries on its back a shawl decorated with enamel and rests on a pedestal also decorated with enamel. The entire ensemble, crowned by the figure of a small rooster, rests on a dome-shaped base set upon four angel-shaped legs and decorated with four circular medallions hand-painted with allegorical and mythological scenes. The clock mechanism was manufactured by Gregson, Paris, with mechanism number 11430. Total height: 20 cm. The enamel on the dial has a small chip.
