The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser a romantic novella by Aubrey Beardsley, interwoven with a detailed description of the customs at the court of Lady Venus, goddess and seductress in the infamous Hörselberg, which concludes with Tannhäuser’s adventures there, his repentance, his journey to Rome and his return to the Liebesberg; the first translation based on the original printed edition of the manuscript (La Chaleur du Brandon Venus le Roman de la Rose), Hans von Weber had this book printed in Munich at the Poeschel & Treppte printing house in Leipzig for a private circle of 246 subscribers in an equal number of copies, and had it bound by hand by Karl Sonntag Jr. in Leipzig, who had it bound by hand in marquetry parchment volumes; this copy is no. 129, undated, circa 1920, size Gr. 8°, 9 leaves, 64 pp., 3 leaves, gilt edges at the top, parchment binding with a gold-embossed cover vignette outlined in green, in its original slipcase; the back cover bears traces of a former bookplate; minor signs of age and wear from use.
