FRANZ BERGMANN (Austrian School, 1861–1936) Sculpted table lamp in cold-polychromed Viennese bronze, “The Bedouin Tent,” 34 x 20 x 25 cm An important sculptural lamp that masterfully depicts a jaima, or Arab tent, whose outer folds mimic profusely ornamented textiles in shades of maroon, ochre, and gold, and on the exterior of which rests a large circular metal shield and a spear—symbols of protection and military guard— while inside sits the figure of an Arab gentleman dressed in traditional garments and a turban, accompanied by objects from everyday life in the East such as rugs, a hookah, a coffee pot, and a rifle. The ensemble is crowned by an openwork dome of Islamic inspiration, decorated with colored glass, which houses the lamp inside.
