The back of the frame features a reproduction of the title on the painting board: “Nordkap wie man es bei der Ankunft sieht.” Painting dimensions approx. 33 x 47 cm, frame dimensions 52.5 x 64.5 cm. Robert Schmidt-Hamburg, a self-taught marine painter, served as a sailor for 72 months between 1901 and 1914, participating in numerous sea voyages, including trips to Africa. At the outbreak of World War I, he volunteered for the Imperial Navy but, due to his talent for painting, was assigned by the Naval War Directorate to work as a marine painter and illustrator with a studio in Kiel. In the 1920s and 1930s, he created countless works depicting the development of passenger and merchant shipping, mostly in collaboration with Norddeutscher Lloyd. Condition: I–II
