A photo album and a silk embroidery by Marine Linsen, 3rd Marine Battalion and Machine Gun Company, East Asian Detachment in Tsingtao and Beijing, 1909–12 Chinese lacquer album (spine missing), with a relief-carved Chinese dragon in bone on the cover (slightly damaged). 121 photographs, some black-and-white images, and newspaper clippings: Machine Gun Company in front of the stables in Tsingtao, a Chinese military airship, photos of military maneuvers, photos of all diplomatic missions represented in Tsingtao in uniform (Americans, French, Austrians, Italians), Chinese actors and traditional costumes, Boxers, executions, etc. Dimensions 27 x 35 x 7 cm. Also included is a silk-embroidered picture inscribed “In memory of my service in China 1909–1912” featuring a photograph of the album’s owner (Seaman Linsen, machine gun unit) and epaulets of the 3rd Naval Battalion, mounted under glass in a contemporary, elaborately embossed, gilded frame (slightly bumped), dimensions 100 x 75 cm. Partially slightly damaged, with signs of wear and age. A very interesting, unique collection from the estate of a machine-gun soldier stationed in China. Paul Linsen was involved in the secret transport of the last Chinese emperor, Pu-Yi, out of the Forbidden City to bring the then five-year-old emperor to safety amid the turmoil of the revolution. These experiences are documented in two newspaper articles pasted onto the first page of the album. Condition: II
