Otto Prince of Bismarck (1815–1898)—a hand-signed letter to the mayor of Herford, 1866 Double sheet (25.9 x 22.2 cm). A dictated letter in ink containing words of appreciation on behalf of King Wilhelm I for “the address presented by members of the Herford district,” which the King graciously “accepted.” Dated “Berlin, June 30, 1866” and bearing the handwritten ink signature “v, Bismarck.” Address at the bottom left: “To the Mayor, Mr. Strosser—Wohlgeboren, in Herford.” Folded in half, slightly browned. The Herford District’s address to the king was likely connected to the Prussian-Austrian War; just a few days earlier, the Prussian army had marched into Saxony, Hanover, and Kurhessen, and a few days after this letter from the then-Prime Minister and Count von Bismarck, the decisive victory was achieved at the Battle of Königgrätz.
