Lieutenant General Luis von Hesberg (1824–1909) – a magnificent saber, a gift from the 6th Cuirassier Regiment, likely presented upon his retirement in 1888. Sabre with a lion’s head pommel; the front guard blade features an applied star, while the rear blade bears the von Hesberg family coat of arms. The grip is covered in fish-scale leather and wrapped in triple-twisted gold wire. Damascus blade with gold bands: On the front, the dedication from the officers of the 6th Cuirassier Regiment to von Hesberg, followed by the names of all the officers; on the back, bands depicting von Hesberg’s battles from the 1870–71 campaign. Steel scabbard with two brass bands and carrying rings (fire damage); officer’s sword knot—the saber no longer fits into the scabbard due to the fire damage. Uncleaned condition; shows signs of age and wear, as well as slight discoloration and soot marks. Lt. Gen. Luis von Hesberg began his military career in 1842 in the Electoral Hessian Life Dragoon Regiment, ultimately serving as commander of the Life Squadron of the Garde du Corps. In 1866, he joined the Prussian Army as a cavalry captain in the Cuirassier Regiment No. 6, where he became squadron commander; in 1867, he was promoted to major and staff officer and took part in the campaign against France with the regiment, for which he was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross.
