An impressive champagne cooler, a gift from the officers' corps of the IR (2nd Rhenish) No. 28 to Lieutenant Kirchhoff on April 15, 1890. Brass, embossed, partially openwork, crafted in multiple sections, with copper inserts. Crafted in the shape of a large goblet with handles. The ornamentally openwork sides provide a beautiful color contrast to the copper ice container insert; two side handles feature putto heads; and the round base is adorned with raised decorative friezes. The lid, decorated in the same style, bears a dedication engraving on the front reading “The Officer Corps of the Göben (2nd Rhenish) No. 28 to Lieutenant Kirchhoff on April 15, 1890,” surmounted by a soaring eagle on a pedestal and another openwork frieze with mascarons and scrollwork over a copper inlay. The set rests on a matching brass plate decorated in the same style. Total height approx. 57 cm, inner diameter approx. 31 cm, weight 7,068 g. Signs of age and wear. An impressive gift for an officer; since a Kirchhoff is listed in the regiment as a Second Lieutenant before 1890 and subsequently as a First Lieutenant, this is likely a gift commemorating a promotion.
