A rare snuffbox commemorating the Peace of Hubertusburg on February 15, 1763 Rectangular, white enamel box with a copper mount featuring beautifully preserved gilding. On the domed lid is a view of Hubertusburg Palace, above which hovers an angel with a trumpet proclaiming peace; along the lower edge is a gold inscription reading “Hubertusburg D.15.Febr. MDCCLXIII.”, the interior features a depiction of a genius holding an ear of wheat and a scepter, with a plowing farmer in the background; above it, the inscription “Iam redire audet” (he already dares to return), and below it, “Germania Pacata” (Germany at Peace). Both depictions are based on the medal commemorating the Peace of Hubertusburg by Johann Ludwig Oexlein (1715–1787). The sides and base feature idyllic depictions of castles and palaces. The interior shows a partially retouched enamel crack and a superficial spider web; the exterior surfaces are nearly undamaged. Dimensions: 85 x 65 x 35 mm. A very well-preserved and exceptionally rare box commemorating the peace treaty between Prussia, Austria, and Saxony, which was signed at Hubertusburg Castle east of Leipzig, brought the Seven Years’ War to an end within the Holy Roman Empire, and was ratified by Frederick the Great just a few days later.
