A portrait of Wilhelm II, Landgrave and Elector of Hesse-Kassel, ca. 1810 Pastel on cardboard. A masterfully executed bust portrait of the future prince in uniform, adorned with medals, including the Hessian Military Order of Merit on a neck chain. On a blue background with a painted oval frame. Mounted behind glass in a contemporary gilded stretcher frame. Image dimensions approx. 35 x 28 cm; with frame, 47 x 40 cm. William II (1777–1847), as a prince holding the rank of Prussian lieutenant general, took part in the battles against Napoleon in the corps of Prussian General Yorck, though he did not distinguish himself. In 1821, following his father’s death, he assumed the throne and initiated reforms based on the Prussian model. In 1831, he transferred the reins of government to his son, Frederick William. Since William I is not yet wearing the medal bar typical of later portraits—featuring the decorations earned during the Wars of Liberation, including the Iron Cross, Second Class—this portrait appears to have been painted before 1813. The style of the uniform also suggests an early date. Condition: II +
