Christian Sell the Younger (1854–1925) — Austrian Medics on a Battle Mission, a gouache, ca. 1910–14 Gouache on paper, signed “Chr. Sell” in the lower left corner. Two field-gray-uniformed medics with a stretcher, rushing to the aid of a wounded soldier from the Imperial and Royal Mounted Field Artillery. In the background, his fallen horse and other field artillerymen on horseback and with horse-drawn carts. Mounted under glass in a wooden frame, partially ebonized or walnut-veneered, with a gilded decorative molding. A nameplate reading “Christian Sell” is affixed to the lower edge, though it lists the dates of birth and death of his father, Christian Sell the Elder. Picture dimensions approx. 23 x 31 cm, frame dimensions 42.5 x 50 cm. Dramatic scene featuring a rare depiction of medics, likely from the early days of World War I. Like his father, Christian Jacob Sell (1831–1883), Christian Wilhelm Sell was a military and battle painter from the Düsseldorf School. Condition: II
