A breech-loading, under-hammer percussion rifle, Casper Schaller, Suhl, circa 1850 Blued octagonal barrel with a 16-groove, polished bore in 15 mm caliber. Above the chamber, inlaid in gold and signed “Manufactured by Casp:Schaller in Suhl,” and marked “English cast steel.” The receiver retains traces of the original color-hardening and is engraved with a delicate scroll design. The top of the breech, the right side of the frame, and the tail screw plate feature delicate nature and hunting scenes, with the animals inlaid in gold. The tail screw plate has a vacant, gold-framed monogram plate made of silver and a lockable diopter base. Breech-loading system opened by a side lever, featuring an underside hammer and a piston safety. Trigger with a German-style trigger guard. Exceptionally finely carved full stock made of high-quality walnut burl wood with a horn tip. Stock shows signs of wear; the nose has a chip on the right side. Iron fittings with remnants of colored hardening. Right-side butt compartment; the lid’s spring-loaded latch opens by pressing a button in the butt plate. Lid decorated in the style of the receiver. Ramrod missing. Length 121 cm. An exceptionally beautiful rifle, possibly made for the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, where Casper Schaller exhibited. Condition: I–II
