A heavy German-style percussion rifle with a 17th-century barrel, circa 1760 Octagonal barrel, indented in the center, with a seven-groove rifling in 20 mm caliber. The top surface features stamped decorative marks and is dated “1661,” later altered to “1764.” Additional stamped decorations on the muzzle. On the left side of the butt, a mark by Wenzel Kutschera of Bautzen (according to Heer, *Der neue Stöckel*, No. 675). Modified percussion lock (defective) with a needle striker (trigger needle broken off). Lock plate signed “St. Etienne(?)”; a crowned “I” and “85” stamped. Back side stamped with “Chapovion(?)”. Slightly cut walnut full stock with engraved brass fittings and butt plate. Partially refinished. Iron ramrod. Stock partially heavily worm-eaten and showing several signs of repair; one chip each on the left and right sides of the muzzle and two chips around the tail screw plate. Muzzle missing. Small chip at the front of the trigger guard; the tail screw plate has a crack at the screw. The lock is loose; one screw from the lock counterplate is missing, and one screw has been added. Length 162 cm. Presumably originally a military musket, later converted for civilian use into a heavy target rifle. The lock was likely replaced during its period of use. Condition: III +
