476 - Delicate Baroque rayed monstrance

Delicate Baroque rayed monstrance probably Italian, mid-18th century, unmarked, gilded and silver-plated metal, central glass pane, inlaid green and red glass stones, oval base with moulded lower edge featuring delicate embossed Baroque floral motifs, on the display side an oval cartouche depicting St George slaying the dragon, above which is a baluster shaft, a multi-layered halo with openwork floral motifs and ears of corn, and a decorative border mounted at the front featuring stylised lilies and blossoms, the uppermost tip crowned by a cross; inside the capsule, fine monastic stucco carving with a relief depiction of the Holy Trinity; lockable from the rear via a small door; in the base, a secret compartment containing inlaid documents (relic certificate of Nicolaus Angelus Maria Landini dated 1765? (1695-1782) concerning a fragment of the wood of the Cross, which is not included), probably not entirely complete; some tiny hairline cracks, otherwise all well preserved for its age; H 39 cm.
