Bronze torso of a Buddha statuette, Hinterindien, Ayutthaya period, 16th–17th centuries. Torso of a Buddha, preserved up to hip level; the right arm is completely missing, and the left arm is broken off at the elbow. Hollow-cast figure with a solid clay core. The bronze wall below the nipple on the right side of the abdomen is broken off. The figure likely originated from a statue of Shakyamuni in the Bhumisparsha-mudra. The face and upper body are rendered in the style typical of the Ayutthaya period. The face is of high artistic quality, with balanced proportions and elegant, subtle nuances in the eyebrows, eyelids, and corners of the mouth. The pierced earlobes hang down far. The head and the ushnisha rising above it are covered with fine curls; above this is the flame of enlightenment, the very tip of which is broken off. The surface, particularly from the neck down, shows a layer of oxides and incrustations. A very beautiful fragment of an ancient Buddha statue in an excellent style. Preserved height: 20.5 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in northern Germany, acquired at an auction in the southern German art market. Condition: II -
