Monumental, pseudo-ritual bronze axe, resembling ancient objects, circa 1900 An axe weighing 1,820 g, intended for imaginary, representative, or ritual purposes. Conceived as an antiquized fantasy object within the context of Historicism. An exceptionally heavy and thick bronze blade with an upward-curving, bent cutting edge that terminates in a backward-curving, downward-pointing volute. A bevel approximately 2.5 cm wide on the axe, which is approximately 2.3 cm thick immediately in front of the cutting edge. The shaft tube is rectangular and profiled on the outside, with a ring-shaped collar below it. Attached to this collar is an antique, cone-shaped sheet metal object secured with modern wire, which was presumably intended to suggest that it served as the lower end of the axe handle. On the upper side, the round hole in the shaft tube is covered with an original antique part: a round, turned, and profiled knob is soldered there. Four prominent ridges on both sides between the shaft tube and the blade. Antiquized object from the L. Marzoli Collection. Height 18.5 cm. Width 17.5 cm. Provenance: Axel Guttmann Collection, acquired for this collection from the L. Marzoli Collection in the late 1980s. Condition: I -
