Round silver pendant depicting Thor with Hugin and Munin, 10th century. Cast, medallion-like pendant with a beaded border along its round outline. A ribbon-shaped eyelet is soldered to the top; on the front, there is a recessed central strip from which a raised row of hemispherical protrusions emerges. The central field depicts the upper body of Odin, whose pointed, long beard covers his chest. The eyes, eyebrows, and hairstyle are rendered through sculpted, raised ridges. With his arms bent at the elbows—and wearing ring-shaped jewelry on his wrists—he encircles the necks of his ravens, Hugin and Munin, positioned before him, who whisper to him from the side the observations from their daily foray. Above the elongated necks are heads with beaks and neck tufts; below them is plumage marked by a pattern resembling fir branches. At the bottom, a stylized bird’s foot on each side. The reverse side shows scratches and pressure marks. Height: 2.8 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany, acquired in the late 1990s from the collector’s father’s collection. Condition: I -
