Two Urnfield-period phalerae with dot-and-knob decoration, 10th–9th centuries B.C. Phalerae in the shape of two large tutuli. On the exterior, they feature a flat rim approximately 1.6 cm wide, decorated all around with a circular row of knobs, bordered by two lines of dot-punch marks. In the center, above a short, slightly beveled wall, is a conical elevation topped by a spindle-shaped decorative knob with a small cone at its tip. On one of the phalerae, the eyelet for attaching it to a surface is still preserved below the decorative knob. On the cones is a cross with broad arms, bordered on the sides by a row of dot-punctures. A similar row of dot-punctures runs around the edge of the cone. There is one bump at each end of the cross arms and in the corners between them. Dark brown surface with greenish oxidation spots. Minimal chipping along the edges; otherwise, in excellent condition. Two magnificent examples of Urnfield Period craftsmanship featuring the typical dot-and-knob decoration, likely used as ornamentation on a horse harness. Diameters: 8 cm and 8.3 cm. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany, acquired at the beginning of the millennium from the collector’s father, who passed away in 2013. Condition: II +
