Urnfield period rattling plate pendant, 10th to 9th century B.C. Base plate consisting of two discs connected by a double bar, with three rings below; the entire base plate assembly is connected by bars arranged in an X-shape, like the eyes of the number five on a die. Between the two lower rings is another double bar. Each of the lower two rings of the base plate has a ring set into it. Each of these rings is connected to two pendants featuring a ring-shaped end, a central vertical bar, and a hollow, boat-shaped end. The boat-shaped ends exhibit minor casting defects. On the reverse side of the two upper discs are eyelets for attaching the rattle to a base. Beautiful, dark green patina that allows the metallic substrate to show through in raised areas. Length 12.5 cm. A rattling plate of exceptionally complex construction, likely produced in a single casting using a complicated casting process. Intact, with no missing parts or restorations. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany, acquired at the beginning of the millennium from the collector’s father, who passed away in 2013. Condition: I -
