Two Copper Age axes, Southeastern Europe, 4th millennium B.C. 1) A blunt-necked axe with slightly curved sides that widen only slightly toward the rounded cutting edge. A slightly rough surface typical of copper alloys, with a thin green oxide layer over a reddish-brown patina. Two scratches on one side. Length 18 cm. Maximum height 4.7 cm. Maximum thickness 2 cm. 2) A blunt-necked axe with slightly curved sides that widen noticeably toward the rounded cutting edge and sweep out toward the corners of the cutting edge. The blunt neck is almost rectangular in shape and only 2 cm wide; the cutting edge is 6.5 cm. Greenish-brown, slightly mottled patina with minimal deposits. Length 18.2 cm. Maximum thickness 1.5 cm. While the first specimen’s shape is still heavily modeled after stone axes, the second specimen already represents an advanced stage of development that fully exploits the design possibilities of the new material—while maintaining functionality—including, among other things, more material-efficiently. The significantly wider cutting edge fully withstands the stresses to which it is subjected despite the object’s reduced material usage and overall weight, and the axe is also easier to mount on a handle. CULTURAL HERITAGE! Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany, acquired at the beginning of the millennium from the collector’s father, who passed away in 2013. Condition: II +
